A lot of things have changed in 50 years. Smyrna is not the same as it was when we were in school, but neither are we the same people who left high school fifty years ago. The Bank of Smyrna is gone, along with J. D. Daniel’s Red Dot Grocery Store, Jonquil Theater, GB’s Place
and Fouts Texaco Service Station, however many great things have “sprung up” in their place.

Want to feel really old? Some of us remember the vacant lot before Belmont Hills Shopping Center was built in the 1950’s. It was billed as the “Largest Shopping Center in the Southeast”. Belmont Hills has now been razed and is being replaced with a mixed-use development of shops, offices, homes, condos, and a school. Below are planned and unplanned weekend activities for your consideration.

Friday, September 20, 2013 and Saturday, September 21, 2013 – SMYRNA MUSEUM
The Smyrna Museum, located in the old Aunt Fanny’s Cabin building in the middle of downtown Smyrna, will be open for touring from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. both days. Don’t miss the opportunity to see an incredible collection of pictures and memorabilia from old Smyrna, Oakdale, and Vinings. If you haven’t been back to Smyrna in a while (or even if you have), the Smyrna Museum is a “must see”. We hope you will make time to take a trip down Memory Lane.

Smyrna Walking Tour - at your leisure
After your visit to the Smyrna Museum, you might want to cross Atlanta Road to take a brief walking tour of the Smyrna Market Village with its numerous restaurants and shops. Continue through the Village and turn right on King Street. On your left, is the Smyrna Veteran’s Memorial depicting the names of many of the brave men who have served our country. Next, at 2800 King Street, is Smyrna City Hall. Continue on King Street to Village Green Circle, where you will see the Community Center and the Smyrna Library.

Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. – TOUR OF OUR OLD SCHOOL
Everyone is invited to meet at 1:00 p.m. and tour Campbell Middle School, which was formerly Campbell High School. We have invited several other CHS classes to join us for the tour. Although the school has changed quite a bit, it will be good to walk those “halls of ivy” one more time! The school will be open from 10am until 4pm, in case you cannot meet with the rest of us at 1pm.

Sunday, September 22, 2013 10:00 a.m. – BRUNCH AT VARNERS
What a great way to wrap up a wonderful reunion weekend!! We hope that you will join us Sunday morning for brunch at Varners Restaurant and Tavern, located at 725 Concord Road SE; Smyrna, GA 30082. This is a "pay on your own" brunch with scrumptious food to suit everyone’s taste. If you think you might want to attend this brunch, let us know, so we will have a general idea of the number of attendees.

AROUND TOWN . . .

Shopping:
Do you remember when it was Love Street and not Concord Road? The following specialty shops are located on this historic road that leads to the Smyrna Covered Bridge.

  • Love Street Gifts - 1295 Concord Road
  • Heart & Sole Clothing - 1275 Concord Road
  • The Nest Gifts – 762 Concord Road (Located in “historic” Dickson’s Shopping Center)
  • McEntyre’s Bakery – 1184 Concord Road*

*McEntyre’s Bakery was opened in the late 1940’s and continues to be owned and operated by 3rd and 4th generations of McEntyres. Their byline is "Four Generations As Metro Atlanta’s Home Town Bakery". McEntyre’s is famous for their cakes (especially wedding cakes), pies, pastries, breads and sandwiches. (Only open until 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays)

If you get a chance, visit Howard’s Restaurant, located at 652 Concord Road in Smyrna. Their meeting room has been transformed into the “Campbell Room” and is decorated with pictures and memorabilia representing the “good old green and white days”. The food is excellent at Howard’s, too.

You may also want to visit the Honeybee Apparel and Treasure Shop (clothing and jewelry), located at 2968 Atlanta Road in Smyrna.

There are also an abundance of shops and restaurants located in Vinings Jubilee, a specialty shopping center on Paces Ferry Road in the heart of Vinings.

WEBSITE & FACEBOOK PAGE: Kayward Davis, our own classmate and accomplished Webmaster, has created this fabulous website that brings back so many wonderful memories. Please check out every page. For starters, send Kayward a current picture for the “Then and Now” page. There are over 70 classmates featured on this growing page. If you're not on it...you need to be. For those who have sent in information, a short mini-bio is featured when you mouse over the pictures or while scrolling through the slide show. Also, on the same page and to the right of the pictures is a list of classmates who we have not been able to locate. Please take a close look at these names, and if you have address information on anyone on the list, please let us know. Or, if we have missed someone who was a classmate, but perhaps moved before graduating, we need that information as well.

Bookmark this website and come back often. It's the place to go for all the latest information on reunion events; hotel information and special pricing; restaurants; specialty shopping; and other interesting links, including area golf courses.

FACEBOOK: Kayward has also created a Facebook page for our class. Use it to share your thoughts with other classmates and contribute to the experience by sharing any photos of interest.

For questions or suggestions for this website or the Facebook page, contact Kayward at: drawyak@yahoo.com.
